

He marches at speed into Sussex, arriving on the night of 13 October 1066: he goes into camp on Caldbec hill, just inside the southern edge of the Andresweald forest.
After an exchange of emissaries, to test each other's intentions and mettle, you break camp early on the 14th and march inland. As you crest Telham hill, ahead, about a mile distant, you see another hill on the far (north) side of a shallow marsh-flanked vale, and upon its height the English army is even now deploying. It will be a strong position, if you have to attack up those rough slopes.
Send troops from the vanguard to make contest for the high ground.
Halt the vanguard here and form up, then advance to cover the rest of your army's approach.
