William the Conqueror: 1061 to 1066

Are you CRAZY? This man hates you. You kept him a prisoner for two years; your troops killed his brothers in battle. What makes you think he would not seize you as well as anyone else that can be held to ransom? You spend a good two years (and more) in a dungeon, while count Guy receives a ransom from earl Harold's people and sends him back to England. You finally get back to Normandy, only after paying an even larger ransom and agreeing to a non-aggression pact for life, in which count Guy becomes your suzerain for Normand holdings on his border. Ponthieu gets bigger, and Normandy a little smaller as a result.

While you were a prisoner, king Edward died in England and Harold was crowned. You have no excuse, nor means, by which to invade England and promote yourself. The old promise of Edward to you, died with him, without a whimper as the saying goes. "The Conqueror" you are definitely not: maybe, "William the (feckless) Bastard," would suit.

Contemplate the heavenly city, you will have nothing more....
